From claw clips to scrunchies, it seems like there’s no end to the 90s’ fashion trend. Thanks to the resurgence of Y2K fashion, many dated trends rose from their graves and remerged in society. One of those trends is the brightly coloured hair tinsels or also known as, “fairy hair.”
What Is Fairy Hair?
Named “fairy hair” by Gen Z, this trend involves tying strands of tinsels into different sections of your hair. These iridescent strings stand out from your hair colour and completely change up your look. As the results often make one feel and look more magical, Gen Z decided to name it, “fairy hair.”

This trend is great for it is a great alternative for those who want to spice up their hairstyle without causing damage. Additionally, you do not need to dedicate the same amount of commitment as dyeing your hair or getting highlights.
It is deemed as a low-maintenance and colourful accessory that could be worn all year long. These tinsels are not only sturdier than the tinsels you see in a festive décor but some of them could also be styled with heat.
Where Do Hair Tinsels Come From?
Before “fairy hair” made its rounds on TikTok, the act of tying tinsels in one’s hair was made popular in 2010 when Beyoncé showed up at the 52nd Grammys Awards with tinsels tied to her blonde hair. Since then, people have been sporting hair tinsels in their hairdo before the trend died down.
12 years later, this trend revived and people are sporting hair tinsels as part of their look once again.
How to Put Hair Tinsels in Your Hair?

There are two ways to put hair tinsels in your hair: through a salon or DIY.
For DIY hair tinsels, there are various varieties available. Some of the tinsel comes with a small detachable clip for you to easily attach them below the layers of your own hair, near the roots.
Other tinsel requires you to perform the micro ring method where these tinsels will be attached using a micro ring. You will be required to thread a small section of your hair and up to 20 strands through a bead, near the roots. After threading, you have to secure the tinsels with pliers.
Those who are looking for a more subtle look can choose to attach the hair tinsels individually. All you have to do is to fold the tinsel in half, create a slip knot, and tie it to a thin layer of hair. This helps give your hairstyle a subtle shimmer without overwhelming your overall look.
The hair tinsel comes in a wide variety of colours and you can purchase them from Shopee, Lazada or Althea.
