A male school counsellor of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) was reprimanded and suspended from conducting sexuality education classes after giving a presentation containing anti-LGBTQ sentiments to students of the school.
A photo of the presentation slide surfaced on Reddit over the weekend and has since garnered over 3.5k upvotes as of this writing. The presentation happened last Wednesday, 13 Jul 2022, and was delivered to the school’s Secondary 4 cohort.
Part of the presentation contained content casting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people in a negative light.
Presentation Peddled Misinformation About Homosexuality
The counsellor shared slides that contained unsubstantiated claims about homosexuality. These claims included how some homosexuals have problems with intestinal worms, how a proportion of them are paedophiles, and that homosexuality is linked to problems such as alcoholism and sexual assault.
According to the Reddit thread, a video by TrueLove. Is was shown during the school presentation as well. According to its website, TrueLove. Is is a Christian ministry that provides stories and resources for Christians who want to know more about LGBT issues.
Hwa Chong Institution Responds
On Monday, 18 Jul, HCI said that it was aware of the incident.
According to TODAY, a spokesperson from HCI said, “We are aware of the incident which took place during a presentation on sexuality where a staff member incorporated content outside the scope of the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Sexuality Education curriculum into his slides.”
The spokesperson clarified that the views presented were the individual staff’s personal perspectives and not representative of the position of the school or MOE. “The staff has since been reprimanded for delivering content without the school’s approval and suspended from delivering further sexuality education lessons.”
“We take a serious view of this incident and have met up with our students to address their concerns. To ensure that such incidents are not repeated, we will also review our processes,” they added.
